How it works

  1. Give the calculator your birth details

Fill in the day, hour and place you were born. The tool converts the time for you, including daylight saving rules from your birth year.
  2. Read your rising sign

See your sign for your birthplace. If your birth time is not exact, try a few times either side, since a small change can tip it into a neighbouring sign.
  3. Try another city

Enter a place you live in or want to visit and see the rising sign your chart has there, along with the new Midheaven.

This rising sign calculator takes your birth date, time and place and gives you the zodiac sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon when you were born. Choose another city and it shows the rising sign your chart has from there, since the horizon differs from place to place. Astrologers link the rising sign with your first impression and how you meet new situations. It is free, needs no account and works out your birth time zone for you.

What a rising sign is

As the Earth turns, each zodiac sign takes its turn coming up over the eastern horizon. The one coming up at the moment of your birth is your rising sign, also called your Ascendant. Astrologers describe it as the first impression you give, or the window you look at the world through. It is about how you come across, which may be quite different from how you feel inside.

Your Sun sign is set by your birthday and is shared with everyone born around that time of year. Your rising sign depends on the exact time and place, which is why two people born on the same day can have very different ones. That is what this calculator is for.

Why the minute you were born matters

Maya's Sun lines on a world map, with a dashed plum line showing where the overhead line would sit if she was born one hour later

The rising sign changes about every two hours. Here is what happens to Maya, born on June 10, 1990, in New York, if we change only the time:

Birth timeRising sign
1:30 pmVirgo 27°
2:00 pmLibra 3°
2:30 pm (actual)Libra 9°
4:00 pmLibra 27°
4:30 pmScorpio 3°

Half an hour either side of a sign boundary is enough to change the answer. To find out how firm your own result is, compare two or three times around your best estimate and see whether the sign holds.

The best source is your birth record, if you have one. A rounded time, such as 2:00 or 2:30 on the dot, may well be an estimate, so testing a few nearby times is worthwhile.

Same moment, different city

This is the part worth trying for yourself. The sign on the horizon depends on where you stand, so your chart has a different rising sign in every part of the world. Here is Maya's birth moment read from six places:

CityRising sign
New York (birth)Libra 9°
ChicagoVirgo 28°
LondonSagittarius 0°
TbilisiCapricorn 18°
TokyoGemini 4°
SydneyTaurus 18°

Maya's birth rising sign stays Libra for life. What the city version adds is a local angle. Astrologers who use relocated charts would ask how Maya might come across or start things in London compared with New York, and would look at the Sagittarius rising there as part of that reading.

Notice that Chicago and New York, both in the same country, already land in different signs. London's Sagittarius 0° sits right on a sign boundary, and a slightly earlier birth time would make it Scorpio there.

Rising sign versus Sun sign

Maya's Sun is in Gemini in every one of those cities, because the Sun's sign depends on the date of birth, not the place. Astrologers treat the Sun as the main thread of a chart, tied to who you are at the core. The rising sign is more about the way you present and how you begin things. Keep them apart and a lot of astrology gets easier to read. One way to notice your own rising sign is to compare how people describe you when they first meet you with how you see yourself.

From your rising sign to your map

Your rising sign leads straight to the rest of this site, because each planet also has a rising line: the places where it was coming up over the horizon at the moment you were born.

  • In a city near one of those lines, that planet is close to the rising point of your chart. Maya's Moon rising line is 22 km from Tbilisi, and Maya's chart there has Capricorn rising with the Moon, also in Capricorn, right beside it.
  • To see which planets sit near your rising point around the world, draw your astrocartography map.
  • To see the whole chart for a city and not only the rising sign, open a relocation chart.
  • To find a place to try, start with where to live, which ranks cities by your goal.

Tips for a result you can trust

  • Use the birth place, not where you grew up. The calculation needs the location of your birth.
  • Double-check AM and PM before anything else, since a mix-up gives a completely different sign.
  • When a result looks wrong, test a time a few minutes either side. You may be sitting on a sign boundary.

FAQ

Why do I need an exact birth time for my rising sign?

The zodiac turns past the horizon quickly, with a new sign coming up about every two hours. A half-hour error can move you into the next sign if you are near a boundary. The closer your time, the more you can rely on the answer.

What if I do not know my birth time?

A rising sign depends on the time, so enter your best estimate, such as morning or evening, and try a few times around it. If the same sign keeps appearing, you can be more confident about it.

Is my rising sign the same as my Ascendant?

Yes. Rising sign and Ascendant mean the same thing. The Ascendant is the exact degree on the eastern horizon at your birth, and the rising sign is the zodiac sign that degree falls in. The two words are used interchangeably.

Does my rising sign change if I move?

Your birth rising sign stays the same for life, because it records one moment in one place. What changes is the relocated rising sign, a second reading of your chart from the new city. Astrologers read that one as a local layer on top.

Why does another calculator give me a different rising sign?

Usually the cause is the birth time or time zone entered, especially old daylight saving rules. Near a sign boundary, even a tiny difference can tip the sign. Compare the exact time each calculator used before deciding which to trust.

Which matters more, my Sun or my rising sign?

Astrologers call the Sun the main thread of a chart, tied to your core self, and the rising sign the way that self meets the world. They answer different questions, so most readers look at both together and do not rank one above the other.
