How it works

  1. Draw your lines

Enter your birth details to see all 48 lines on the world map, each labelled with its body and angle.
  2. Find a line you are curious about

Switch bodies on and off until the one you want stands out, or tap a place and read the lines near it.
  3. Match it to this page

Take the body section and the angle section below and read them as one sentence, then see how far that line runs from places you know.

Astrocartography lines meaning comes from two halves: the body says what the theme is, and the angle says where in life it shows up. Venus is tied to affection and Jupiter to growth, while an overhead line points to your public side and an underfoot line to home. Put them together and a Jupiter overhead line links growth with career direction and reputation. There are 12 bodies and 4 angles, so 48 lines in all. Astrologers treat these as symbolic themes, not forecasts.

The four angles: where the theme shows up

Diagram of the four angles: rising in the east, overhead at the top, setting in the west, underfoot below

Each body has four lines, one for each moment in its daily trip across the sky.

Rising line (AS, Ascendant)

The places where the body was climbing over the eastern horizon at your birth. Astrologers tie it to first impressions and how you instinctively meet new situations.

Setting line (DS, Descendant)

The places where it was going down on the western horizon. This line is about relating to others one-on-one: close partners, collaborators and clients, and the qualities you look for in them.

Overhead line (MC, Midheaven)

The places where it stood at its highest. It points to your public side, including the goals you aim at and what you want to be known for.

Underfoot line (IC, Imum Coeli)

The places where it was at its lowest point, crossing the meridian below the horizon. It stands for roots, your private base and what grounds you when nobody is watching.

The 12 bodies: what the theme is

Sun lines

The core of who you are: vitality, confidence and creative drive. Astrologers see these as places where you may feel more like yourself and more visible. Maya's Sun overhead line passes 9 km from Austin.

Moon lines

Emotional life: what makes you feel safe and the habits you slip into without thinking. Often read as places that can feel like home. Maya's Moon underfoot line is 13 km from Barquisimeto.

Mercury lines

How you think, learn and talk. Connected with writing, teaching and everyday curiosity, so these lines come up for study and for exchanging ideas. Maya's Mercury rising line is 219 km from Tokyo.

Venus lines

What you find beautiful and who you are drawn to, along with comfort and harmony with others. These are the lines astrologers look at first for love. Maya's Venus setting line is 107 km from Brasília.

Mars lines

Your drive: how you go after what you want and stand up for yourself. Astrologers call this energy neither good nor bad, as it depends how you use it. Maya's Mars setting line is 295 km from New York.

Jupiter lines

Growth, optimism and curiosity, plus the beliefs and travels that widen your world. Often looked at first for career. Astrologers add a note of balance, since too much of a good thing can turn into complacency. Maya's Jupiter overhead line is 21 km from Antofagasta.

Saturn lines

Structure, responsibility and patience, where results have to be earned. It can feel like pressure before it feels like reward, and handled well it gives steadiness. Maya's Saturn rising line is 379 km from Tbilisi.

Uranus lines

The urge to break free and do things your own way, with original ideas and sudden changes. Its challenge is keeping your independence while staying connected. Maya's Uranus underfoot line is 273 km from New York.

Neptune lines

Imagination, compassion and the longing for something bigger than everyday life. Linked with art and music, and also with wishful thinking, so the lesson is to stay open and keep one foot on the ground. Maya's Neptune underfoot line is 16 km from Québec.

Pluto lines

Deep change: letting go of the old and rebuilding, with intense feelings and a drive to get to the truth. Maya's Pluto setting line is 60 km from Tokyo.

North Node lines

The North Node is a point and not a planet. It marks where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's path heading north. Modern astrologers read it as the direction you are invited to grow in, usually in areas that feel unfamiliar at first. Maya's North Node underfoot line is 167 km from São Luís.

Chiron lines

Chiron is a small body orbiting between Saturn and Uranus. Astrologers link it to old sore spots and the understanding that can come from them, so these lines are about accepting a tender area of yourself. Maya's Chiron overhead line is 48 km from Punta Arenas.

Putting the two halves together

Maya's Venus and Moon lines on a world map, with her top three cities for love marked

Read the body, then the angle. Sun overhead: being seen, in your public side. Moon underfoot: feeling safe, in your home life. Mercury rising: coming across as curious and talkative. Saturn setting: responsibility and patience in close one-to-one ties. The map writes these sentences out for you when you tap a line, and How to Read Your Map walks through a whole place.

Which line is the best?

Maya's Sun and Jupiter lines on a world map, with her top three cities for career marked

There is no winner, because it depends on what you are after this year. For love, astrologers look to Venus and the Moon. For career, Jupiter and the Sun, especially on an overhead line. For home, the Moon on an underfoot line. Lines that sound hard can be what someone wants: a Saturn line can suit a person who wants to work steadily at something, and a Pluto line someone who wants to start over.

How close a line needs to be

Chart: a line counts most at 0 km, about a third at 350 km, and not at all past 1,000 km

Astrologers have no agreed cut-off, though they all treat closer as stronger. On this site, the lookup shows every line within 1,000 km of a place. For ranking, a line at 350 km carries about 37% of the weight of one through the city, and one at 700 km barely registers. Treat your closest few as the ones worth reading.

East or west of a line?

There is no settled rule. The scoring here uses distance alone, so a line counts the same from either side. If you want a closer look at what shifts as you move, open a relocation chart for both places.

FAQ

What is the best astrocartography line?

It depends on your goal. Astrologers usually point to Venus for love, Jupiter or the Sun for career, and the Moon for home. A line's value also depends on how close it runs and on what you want at this point in your life, so no single line wins for everyone.

How close to a line do I need to be?

There is no agreed distance. Closer is stronger in every approach, and many readers focus on the few hundred kilometres around a line. Here, the lookup shows the exact distance to all lines within 1,000 km, so you can decide for yourself.

No lines where I live: is that bad?

No. Astrologers would say that no single line's theme stands out in that place, which leaves your birth chart as the main story. That can suit someone who wants a calm base. You can always visit a line when you want its theme.

Should I be east or west of a line?

Nobody has settled this one, and this site's ranking treats both sides alike, counting only the distance. If you are near a line, try a place on each side and see whether you notice any difference.

Are Saturn and Pluto lines bad?

They are not bad. Astrologers tie Saturn to discipline and lasting work, and Pluto to deep change and starting over. Some people seek these out on purpose. The themes depend on what you want from your time there.

What are MC lines in astrocartography?

An MC line is an overhead line: the places where a body stood at its highest point when you were born. Astrologers link it with your public side, such as your goals, reputation and career direction, in whatever form those take in your life.

Why does this map include the North Node and Chiron?

Modern astrologers read both alongside the planets. The North Node is tied to growing in unfamiliar directions, and Chiron to tender spots and what you learn from them. You can switch either one off if you prefer to focus on the planets.
